WELCOME
TO WALKABOUT FARM
Walkabout
Farm is a 44-acre boarding facility located in Southern
Wake County, near the Willow Springs community.
Walkabout
Farm is a perfect place for the independent adult rider
who desires excellent, personalized care for their horse.
Children are definitely welcome, but must be under the
direct supervision of their parent or guardian at all
times. No specific discipline other than humane treatment
is stressed. We have a lit full-sized out-door riding
arena (120' by 240'), and plenty of trails to allow you
to enjoy your relationship with your horse in ways that
work best for you.
Walkabout
Farm is a small facility (20 horses - 12 stall-boarded,
8 pasture-boarded), yet with a full-time barn manager.
Horses are given grain twice daily and hay as needed.
Horse care is our priority.
Walkabout
Farm is also the personal home of Margie Rhodes and her
husband Dave Farrar, so someone is always available to
monitor the well-being of your horse.
Margie
Rhodes is the owner of Walkabout Farm. Margie is a
master educator as well as a lifelong horse enthusiast.
At Walkabout Farm, both of those passions combine to help
others enjoy their horses.
For
thirty years, Margie has bred, raised, trained, exhibited, and,
most of all, ridden horses.
A
strong advocate for humane treatment of horses, Margie
has worked most of her adult life on animal welfare
issues. Margie’s interest in natural horsemanship developed
as a result of her work to help improve the plight of
show horses. What began as a commitment to the simple
humane treatment of horses became a dedication to teaching
horses and riders to enjoy each other without artificial
barriers. The positive management practices at Walkabout
Farm are applicable to any breed of horse, any age rider,
and any riding style. All you need is an open heart.
Margie’s
former career in Education Administration and Psychology
converted nicely to the horse world. She has been a
founding member of two statewide trail riding clubs,
one formed in 1984 and the other in 1998. She organized
and co-founded two pleasure horse shows, the Tarheel
Classic and the Firecracker Jubilee, both of which continue
successfully. She served eight years on the Board of
Directors of the national Breeder’s Association for
Walking Horses (TWHBEA), and co-founded a national animal
advocacy association for the welfare of the Walking
Horse (NWHA) in 1999. Margie also completed four years
of service to the horses and people of North Carolina
as President of the NC Horse Council.
